A quantity-to-hour ratio is a description of selected records. Its usefulness depends on the activity, the units and the hours included.
Define the numerator and denominator
State the quantity being measured and the labour hours used in the calculation. Installed metres divided by person-hours is different from installed metres divided by a crew's shift duration. If the records do not identify which hours relate to the activity, explain that limitation before presenting a rate.
Combine comparable records
Group records only when their activity definitions and quantity units are compatible. Do not add metres of pipe to cubic metres of excavation or compare activities as if they require the same effort. Locations, access conditions and work methods may also affect whether a comparison is useful.
Calculate the aggregate from the totals
For a selected group of records, divide the total compatible quantity by the total corresponding labour hours. A simple average of daily ratios can give a different result when the days have different hours. If the denominator is missing or zero, show that the measure is unavailable.
Keep observations separate from causes
A lower recorded quantity and a constraint note may occur on the same day. That does not prove the constraint caused the difference or establish a schedule impact. Review the source records and ask what other activity or site context is needed.
Use the figure to guide a discussion
A clearly defined metric can point to a question worth investigating. It should not quietly become a benchmark, a finding of responsibility or proof of entitlement. Make the record period, units and limitations visible beside the chart.
